If the key is the 'macro' level attention and engagement why is there a need for a slipknot lead? Especially as a puppy typically moves from left to right of the walker.

Great videos. We just adopted a 14 week Aussie shep mix that had never had a collar on, let alone a leash. After a very wary first walk, I enticed her with the treats lottery and praise. Third walk I started using your directional change method.
Day two and we’re on walk #5 and she’s barely pulling and immediately stopping when she gets to the end of her leash. She waits for me and looks at me to go. I’m hoping by weeks end she’ll be on the way to a good heel.

my almost 8 month old mini american shepard is fine in the house and in our yard but he is scared of alot of stuff including humans. parvo is bad here so it is my fault for not walking and taking him alot of places. but i have noticed he will do alot of walking past people but if they reach to pet him he's looking at me and i tell him to sit. but if the humans keep reaching for him he goes bananas. In the house if the person sits and ignores him he gets curious and in 5 minutes he is your friend. i also think the parents were chicken the mother barked for like 5 minutes and i was sitting on the floor petting his dad. If someone scares him he does growl but i correct him very fast. I have noticed that my mutt is his muscle… and my aussie is his curiosity. the aussie is the class clown and he adjusts his energy to help the puppy figure everything out and humans wont hurt him. people reach for the aussie then after a minute or 2 the mini wants attention too. its working so far…

Great video but one question, I don't want my dog in the heel position the entire time. How do I give her a break command? Do I stop walking and then break or during walking? Would love to know what's best.

Mate! I really love your videos. I would love to go into the whole journey I'm having with my daughters 12 month old Rotwieller, but I want to keep this short. Between you and one other youtube channel I am making "good" progress. If I may give you a tip on how to advise others or especially new dog owmers , it's something I have learnt over the past 3-4 months is two things… 1. It's not just about traing the dog. I am teaching myself just as much as the dog. Pay a lot of attention to what I am doing and correcting myself first. 2nd. PATIENCE/CONSISTENCY…. It's ok if something takes weeks, just stick at it. And 3. Pay attention to the accidental things that work in your favour. For example, I have taught her to walk on a loose lead, but being 12 months old she likes to creep ahead of me. Instead of giving the chain a gentle tug, I let the lead go slack and when she feels the latch on her shoulder she stops , looks at me and waits till she is in the heel position. My point is….People don't always need a quick fix from a dog trainer. They need to be told by people like you to just "stick at it" "Be consistant" "Be patient" and "Enjoy the time together"

My dad always used what he called a choker chain to do obedience training , it seems similar to your lead, can I use it for training, it’s similar to your method.

The “big picture” part of this is very helpful for me. My puppy is 12 weeks old and I find myself having too high expectations, so I try and correct every little thing. This gives me confidence to just let him be a puppy and work on small things at a time. Love your videos sir.

Have a 12 month Husky/Shepherd that I've just started your way of stopping her pulling and already I've seen the difference. But ! I am her mom and I try to do things by the book, so to speak however. Dad is a different kettle of fish. He does things HIS way so is not training the way I am. How is my girl to know what to do with each of us ?

Love your videos. I found you through Tom Davis 🙂 is there a minimum age the puppy should be for use of a slip lead? I love the reminder to not focus on the jumping and enthusiasm when puppy gets to you. I get too caught up on trying to iron out all the “problems” from the get go. Baby steps. Thank you so much for all the content. You’re really gifted

Thank you, it is so hard to train happy when ther is so much to correct al the time. This video made me realice that every thing dont need to be prefect at the beginning. and that is better fo focuse on having fuun and building a team, than correct everything.

Wow, holy crap. I got a puppy 2 weeks ago he's 16 weeks old. I am also in the Facebook group. He seemed miserable on walks. I couldn't get him to go two blocks, and then he'd turn and pull on the leash desperately trying to get home again. I got a 12 foot section of rope and tried this today and we walked 30 minutes down a logging trail road that hooks up to the street back home. This time he wanted to keep going! He's a German Shepherd mix. Maybe some kind of bull terrier too. Unknown. With GS dog he's going to have a lot of energy. Now I can *finally* take him on longer walks! I have been primarily following your courses. I trained four other dogs with the Monks of New Skete method. This is the first time I have had a reluctant puppy.
