It might not be the same as a kiss, but there is definite affection behind it often. The sweat thing can be true, one of our dogs will only lick your face if you are sweaty, the rest of the time he likes to lick your hand, but it is definitely an affection gesture. He has arthritis, so he isn't big on being held or cuddled, but he likes to be pet and while you pet him he nuzzles and then licks the other hand.
My mother's dog always goes nuts when I visit jumping up in my lap and licking my face and that dog is the most disinterested in food that I have ever seen in an animal, he won't even eat treats most of the time, you offer it and he sniffs and then turns away. He has one type of treat he likes and even those he only wants 2 or 3 and then he's done. Sometimes if he's around my dogs he will take a jerky strip and then walk away and drop it, I think it is the idea of not being left out of the group so since they are all getting them, he wants to participate.
