I have 2 dogs, I have to walk separate for several reasons but my 2yo pup has medium separation anxiety if I leave to take my other dog away from the house. He howls if in crate and becomes destructive. I would like to leave him out but afraid he will still howl try to get out of yard/house. How to help him be okay at home for 20-40 min while I walk my other dog
I know this video was 5 years ago but I'm just watching it. I'm in the process of training my Cane Corso puppy. He is extremely attached to me….. if I go from the living room to the kitchen he will wake up and go to the kitchen and lay near me. I move 5 feet he moves 5 feet etc. I have a semi flexible work schedule which helps bc i can work around my hubby's schedule….. most of the time. I knew my pup would have separation anxiety 😢 so I decided to get pro active. I taught him to stay. When I leave the room I tell him to stay…..I go do what i do. I go back in the room, walk over to him give him a pet and say good stay. He has learned that I leave but I come back. Then I progressed to after a walk I would bring him in the house and walk down to the mailbox etc…… basically the progression mentioned in this video. We can leave him for 4+ hours now and he's excellent!! He's only 7 months old but can chew a 12" cow esophagus in about 5 minutes. I don't think a bone or chew toy exists that will last him more than 15 minutes. Except the marrow bones!!! I buy them at the grocery store and the best part of them is you can refill the middle and freeze it!
first thing I always do when I get a puppy, is teach him to stay alone. For me it is very easy, it just takes me about a week to train a puppy to be calm for at least 8 hours on his own. No chews, nothing, I just desensitise the pup on my absence.
my dog is small and doesn’t really want to exercise first thing in the morning when I go out for a walk. Even if I take her out she doesn’t want to walk.
My dog loves the Kong (we use it for when we cut his nails and other anxiety inducing situations) but whenever we leave the house we could care less about food or toys or anything entertaining. What to do then? We can only leave for 30 seconds without him whining. Should we only be leaving the house once and increase the time everyday or can we do it multiple times a day and increase the time every time?
I just adopted a rescue pup from our local shelter and I think bc he was a stray he doesnt really suffer from this. I decided to do kongs just in case and so far it seems to work. I leave calmly and whrn I come home have to change into comfy clothes so he has to wait until i finally greet him. So jappy w my new dog churro❤
I take mine for a small run at 4:30 in the morning before I have to work and today was actually the first day I had to leave him alone, hence why I’m watching this just in case he’s losing it right now
I take my husky hiking everyday 3-4 miles a day and unfortunately that’s hasn’t worked! My male husky has the worst anxiety ever since we moved. He howls and barks until we get home! I have left him a bone and he will chew it than he gets bored.
He has been superstitious behavior lately. I’m trying to figure out why if he was fine when we lived in an apartment. Now we live in a house. I thought he would be more happy with all the space he has indoor.
I will try the marrow bone and kong! Is there a specific wet food you recommend?
My dog won't chew her bone unless I'm home like she wants to share the experience with me. It's very frustrating because there is nothing I can do to console her while I work. She doesn't destroy anything but when I come home I can tell she was deeply anxious all day long. It's a bummer.
This has helped me already in the space of a few days, Thankyou!! One question, when I leave them for shorter periods of time in the beginning – do I remove the kong/bully stick etc when I return if they have not yet finished it? Thanks!
My dog is missing quite a few teeth (he was missing them when I adopted him) what chew toys would you recommend for him? we’ve tried kongs but they’re too hard for him
My dog won’t take any treats. I leave him in a crate and he is constantly panting, scratching, slamming his body and pacing inside his crate. I have tried frozen food kongs, I have tried bully sticks and marrow bones. He won’t try them when he’s in the crate and I can’t leave him out of the crate. Idk what else to do because I tried everything. I’ve paid thousands of dollars for a trainer and it did nothing for his separation anxiety. Literally don’t know what else to do. I am now trying medication and he’s having bad side effects from it which has made crating him significantly worse 😩😩😩
Hi, only just came across this. I’ve got three dogs one completely laid-back greyhound who is no issue but I have two lurchers. The main problem is the new girl who I think must’ve been very traumatised as she has separation anxiety and we’ve had her for five months And she’s still quite nervous and quite a few settings and still will go to the toilet in the house sometimes. The thing is, she’s actually more tolerant when I totally leave the house whether there’s someone else at home or not, and is worse when I go in another room and as I work from home with clients this is tricky as I always have to get someone to babysit and she can still bark, et cetera . I currently do use Kongs et cetera. I would leave lots of different things out to extend the amount of time she’s busy, but I’m concerned that she may end up fighting over the different objects with my other lurcher who can be a little bit rough with her at times .
I tried the above (Kong), and he didn't even look at it, when regularly he can't take his tongue out of that. Yesterday I left him in the cage… when I got home he was outside. How? I have no idea.
Just another average video, no disrespect. I’ve tried all these methods and it really doesn’t work. If you’re an actual trainer, you’ll know that some dogs refuse food when the owner leaves regardless of how hungry they are. So the fact that we’re talking about basic stuff is just a waste of time… On that note, I walk my dog a fuck ton but when I leave, he still goes crazy. This is another reason why I’m saying this video is bullshit, sorry just telling the truth
I recently rescued a Maltese and he just won't stop barking and pacing while I'm out. We give him Kong and ostrich bones. He typically loves them ,but won't touch them while I'm out
If your dog isn't food motivated, and they are too focused on you leaving that they ignore the marrow bone, kong or bully stick, what do you recommend?
The bone marrow I get is in the supermarket and it's about 6 inches and it lasts for about 2 to 3 days because he tries to get the marrow out from the middle of the bone. If it takes longer than 3 days then I will pull out the rest of the marrow myself and give it to him. I keep about 4 to 6 bones and keep it in the freezer.
I was desperate for some great advice after getting our 9th month old Lab Mix as a rescue. I have watched Joel’s videos for a couple months and now everyone is always talking about how good of a boy he is. Thank you so much for the advice. It has been so much fun training when I had no experience before! I feel much more confident as a person, too. Thank you for everything!!!
12:36 "Kill themselves" over a crate? How many cases show that was the end result? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just am trying to figure out if you're being sarcastic or not lol I mean this is starting to sound like a parrot that plucks itself when patterns change and they're unhappy
My dog Lucy whines and paces the house when me or my husband leave her sight to use the restroom, or she shoves her way into the kitchen [right under your feet while cooking – dangerous] or even shoves herself under my desk, or my husband's computer desk. She will subject herself to the cold floor by our bedroom door in the hallway at night rather sit in her warm plush bed in the other room. Me, my husband and my room mate have all tripped over her in the night. >_< We shut the bedroom door at night because our three cats have the night zoomies once and a while and wake us up. I have ADHD and sometimes her whining and pacing triggers my ADHD rage. Not her fault…some repetitive sounds irk me. She's a sweet dog. Still love her though. Some of the comments about distractions and chew treats are something I'd like to try. We play with her and she loves her dog toys. She loves bones and I buy her fresh butcher bones once and a while. Maybe I need to increase the frequency for her sake. FYI- Lucy is on a raw diet supplemented with high-protein freeze dried kibble.
Does allowing your dog to sleep in bed with you cause dependence and increase the likelihood of srperation anxiety, or does this not tend to matter providing your carrying out the advice in this video?
Our Rottie/GSD mix is a literal psychopath when we leave she even prefers sleeping in the crate. When we leave she freaks out to the max she broke her nail off trying to escape
What if I have two puppies. One 6mths and one 3 mths. They would fight each other for a chew toy. The older one is ok when we leave. I’d like to work on separation anxiety for the younger one. Any suggestions?

I've spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars to solve a problem or get the kind of advice this guy just gave in a 14 minute video.
Thank you so much for posting this
If anyone is wondering, the marrow bones are brand name “Primal”

Crate? What's that's?
Am I right in saying no dog should have load bearing bones?

Ordering supplies today. I really hope it helps.
Best advice here! Tried it and it works
My dog doesn't care for chew toys. Or mental stimulating toys with treats. My dog doesnt even try working for it 😂.
My dog is missing quite a few teeth (he was missing them when I adopted him) what chew toys would you recommend for him? we’ve tried kongs but they’re too hard for him
what do i do when my dog won't play with the chew toys when i leave? tried everything and still not interested.
Can you link the marrow bone?

I have given my bernedoodle fresh venison, bully sticks, hooves and frozen kongs in her crate. She didn't touch them in the crate.

Should we leave a special chew that's only for when we leave and no other time?
