any service dog handlers able to respond to my question? Can my sdit put his paw on my leg to stop it from bouncing? I seen videos of people doing it that way if they couldn’t get their dog to boop their leg so they use their paw instead
I’ve been thinking and I believe I might NEED a service dog for my generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety, as well as autism and ADHD (yes I am professionally diagnosed!) Certain triggers and have me stop preforming day to day tasks, (for me it is focusing on major things that do not contribute to my ADHD and I almost go into a panic like state?) it is very hard for me and can cause me to be behind in school work or not be able to do some chores around the house. I have lots of medical anxiety and my heart rate can go up significantly. Today at the dentist I had a very high heart rate, it is causing a sensory overload which is also a key factor. I’ve done all my research I just need to know if I am qualified for one? If I am I will talk to a professional to see if I can invest in a service dog!
This is something I’m hoping next year to be able to train my future assistance dog. I do all of the above – scratching, restless hands, bobbing knees and scratching. Having a dog to be able to curtail that would be great, currently I’ve only left my flat once in the last two and a half months. Having an assistance dog would help me in many busy places I find hard, fitting in a shielding technique would help me to. I’m looking into getting a Portuguese Water Dog as they would be the right fit for the size of home I have and also would be able to aid me with balance when walking but would also be able to pick object up for me or press buttons, I’ve thought of having a button at the top of the stairs for the dog so that they can be trained to let me know they want to go out for toilet duties.
Doggy-U, I have the opportunity to be given an amazing 3 1/2 year old rough Collie that my breeder friend is retiring from her breeding program. She’s smart as a whip and sweet as sweet can be. My question is, do you think I could train her as my service dog??
Not a service dog story here, but a testament to how amazingly sensitive dogs are to things going on inside us.. 13yrs ago we finally got pregnant with our first daughter. I went over to my friend’s house to tell her the exciting news but she had a chihuahua that had to be put in another room when ppl weee over as her dog would attack everyone not in the family. Anyways, that day she had slipped through the door and belined for me. I thought I was about to get bit again.. No, she didn’t! She came and sat on my lap and wouldn’t let ppl come near me. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing seeing as how that dog’s baseline with me always was. She continued to be that way towards me the entire time I was preggers. Afterwards though, she went right back to how she had always been before the baby.
I’ve been wanting a service dog for years for this and for my panic attack for dyslexia/ dyscalculia when I’m studying in school / test taking, also social anxiety panic attacks and ptsd from my childhood physical, verbal and sexual abuse. ❤

My dog is smart enough to know if im bs'ing her because she alerts on scent. She can trail off, and come back to me if something legitimate happens. But if shes not looking at me, and i pretend to faint or whatever. She knows its not real. What a brat. Haha
My dog started understanding "boop" within minutes. She is a little chunker though, any diet- friendly training treat recommendations? I hope I can get her alerting in the next few months 🥰
Hi Laura, thank you for your amazing videos! Also hello from Finland! I was just wondering that while I've found national resources pretty scarce since other than guide dogs are a relatively new thing in Finland, how well would you think your online courses suit to people outside the ADA legislation, eg in other countries?
What are your thoughts on psychiatric service dogs for teens? And Going to school? I have bad anxiety and also depression. I also just lost my dog a few months ago I’m not ready for a dog yet but I’m just starting to look into it.
My dad and I hope to plan our dog to become a therapy dog. Our only issue is he is 1-1/2 years old and a pitbull mix. He is a very energetic pup but very sweet. He also doesn't listen to ANYTHING. Is he still able to be trained? If so any tips or tricks?
Edit: I have (diagnosed) major depression and anxiety which get and are very bad for me. My whole family suffers from mental disorders.
I really already know all the signs I need for training my service dog, except for like actually being able to train it because I know when I have an anxiety attack cause I have things like heavy breathing, I start shaking my leg. I start biting my nails, and picking like the skin off the top of my nailsand things like that. So you really went over everything I needed here thank you so much. I love this channel.😊
Can my dog be trained to jingle her tags to interrupt? My dad, who is gone now, used to get out his car keys and jingle them when he wanted to end a social interaction and go home.
When you pick something to be an alert behaviour, would it be confusing to the dog if it's something he likes doing sometimes randomly? I want to teach him a headbutt. When he takes a shine to someone when we're out and about, and he gets to meet them, he will headbutt them really firmly with lots of weight, and then rub his face and neck on them in order to grind their scent into his mane haha. I think it's really cute. I think it would be really comforting, and I think it would help him to understand really well how to transition into doing deep pressure therapy, because he's understanding to throw his weight into me, and whenever I see him do that behaviour, he's really persistent about it, because he really wants to get the smell in his fur. I thought picking a behaviour he really likes to do would make him feel enthusiastic about working, but I'm not sure if him having his own motivations to get people's scent on him would make it hard for him to understand if I teach him to do it for other reasons that are more arbitrary to him.
Hello I'm not sure if you will relpy but I have a blue nose pitbull that i have been training because Im part of the PSD community and I have chest problems so i hate attraction with people if i go to a restaurant or something i get my mom to order for me if my mom not there I ask my siblings also have a little heart problem that cause it hard to breath at times and I be leg shaking and pinching myself but he help me whenever I'm with him and he knows how to alert and all that but he struggles with staying still every now and then when someone walks by me and also some people dont let me have him because he isn't completely cable and something else but anyway thank you for this video this helped me out some with how to teach him and also some things i can try to improve with the training 🐕🩷
I’m wanting to get an assistance dog here in the uk and keep coming across road blocks at every turn 😔 I have ADHD, Autism, Depression, Anxiety and Borderline Personality Disorder. If I’m sat up straight I find my leg bobbing up and down, I get really frustrated and angry with myself at times and can get into some really dark places where I start scratching my hands raw with my nails. I find busy places really hard to deal with, especially shopping centres. If I’m in a cafe or restaurant I have to sit facing the door so I know my escape routes. I often sometimes find myself switching the tv off and sitting in the dark. If I’m in a really dark place I’ll go back to bed, until my Arthritis tells me to get out of bed. Some places want over £22,000 I’m scared of trying to train my own dog as that’s an avenue I am possibly facing. I’m debating about getting a King Charles spaniel as there the perfect size for my 1 bedroom flat.
If you are in the US, there is not a certification for service dogs. A “certified” service dog does not exist. There is a form you can apply for from the ADA when it comes to accommodations that you’d need paperwork for (you also do not need to show documentation only to state what the dog is for but this law gets trampled too often), but it literally just consists of listing the tasks the dog does for you, who trained the dog to perform these tasks, and the name of 1 other person who has witnessed the dog perform the tasks. The only legitimate certifications a service dog can receive in the US is a certificate of completion of a training program you decide to put your dog through, but this is mostly for if you’re training the dog for another recipient, to satisfy requirements if you receive a dog through a nonprofit, or to fill out the ADA form mentioned previously if you didn’t train the dog yourself (they may ask for it they may not)
This is great information! I plan on training a dog for these tasks when I move and it’s really important for you and your breeder to know what to look for when pairing you with a dog. I just learned that this is an option because I’ve always been told that “service dogs are not for mental illness” but I’ve been looking for an alternative to relying on medications.
I desperately need a service dog that can help with things like this. I have really bad stimming where I'll twitch my legs or hands, I bite my nails, pick at my skin, and a lot more things and adding on my asthma which can cause breathing problems if I run too much, having a dog that can alert me of that would be so helpful. Sadly, I'm allergic to dogs, but I believe that allergy is slowly fading away as I've been able to have physical contact with dogs and not have an asthma attack.
Praying for the day I can get a service dog to help with my stimming and asthma
Currently training my 5 year old lab mix to be a service dog. He does most of the wanted behaviors on his own. Heels completely off leash. Never once did any formal training other than behavior and just started heel training a week ago. Doesn’t matter the distraction he will stay by me looking at me
(pls note i am in favour of service dogs and looking for one myself) i know most dog breeds love work, we all want purpose in life, but is there a chance that they may burnout from taking on our 24/7 emotional regulation needs, just as a human would?
I know that doctors and other medical professionals can but my doctor told me that they can’t write a service dog letter and how it is preferred for it to be therapists
I pull my hair when I have an panic attack is there anyway I can train my dog to help ( i do wanna try and get him verified to be a service dog cause I don’t feel it’s that bad

If I train my dog myself does it still count?
