I will NEVER understand why adults reach out to pet dogs they do not know! Didn’t their parents teach them manners? My children (All 4) were taught to ask and if told they could how to approach the dog and allow the dog to be comfortable to come to them. I have my own SD, but even when I am out without him, other people’s SD’s will approach me when my medical issues are going off and alert to them. They always tell me the same thing… “I have never seen my dog alert to someone else before! That was amazing!”

Does Cider has his name from a system or did you give him that name?

My husband and I were shopping with a service dog and a random guy walked by and tried to pet her. My husband instinctually let out a sharp “AH ah” just like how we correct his dog if she’s being naughty. Then my husband said “you don’t touch dogs!!!!!” We didn’t stop talking about it for like the next 30 minutes at least

not only did he know Cider is a service dog, even if he didn't't you don't ever just try to touch a dog (and I know a halt isn't bad but it kind of looks 'scary' and he didn't even take that as a hint either, what if you had it cuz he did bite, yknow?)

Always ask to pet. Not just because they might be working but also because dogs bite.

There were markings on the dogs halter saying, "Service dog do not pet." That stupid man could have lost a hand. By asking a person who has a disability or disorder, obvious or not, you are violating their civil rights. Have some restraints, people.

Why is it not obvious to everyone that you don't just touch a dog you don't know ? You don't know if they bite, if that'll stress them. Just ask ffs you've got words use them

Proud he respected that no and backed off
    But dude
    How old are you?

    Like that’s not an insult
I’m genuinely wondering how people get to adulthood and still try to just pet or touch random dogs

Did you parents never teach you to always approach animals with caution
You never know if they’ll bite

Like I can get how a four year old might run up to a dog to pet it without asking
Kids do stuff they’re told not to all the time
That’s why you have to do it again and again every time they try to misbehave so they’ll eventually understand stuff like “don’t pet dogs without asking cuz they could be dangerous”

I had the sweetest little pup in the world
But after a “friend” of my brothers abused her and snapped the bone in her tail
She’s nip at ANYONE who pet her without a nice long inspection first
    Never a big bite
    Just a scared nip

But we’d tell people who asked that no
    She’s not friendly
    And she doesn’t want pets
But our other dog would be happy to get some scritches

    Don’t just pet strange dogs
And please teach your kids that lesson too so they don’t need to learn it as an adult
Or god forbid learn from experience and get some poor scared dog in trouble

    But again
Props to him for backing off and listening

This is why whenever I see a dog nearby with its owner I will just smile and keep going about my day unless the dog and the owner come to me
    I love dogs
But after having so many in my life I know that it’s best to let them come to you when you don’t know them
    And of course
I always leave Service dogs alone to do their work

I was really overstimulated when I was out with my SD (always a fun time in walmart on a saturday), and a woman started to coo and tut at him, I full body turned and glared at her. I immediately caught myself and wanted to apologize, but she said, "Oh am I not supposed to talk to her?" I just gave a flustered grin, shoved my fingers in his aussie fur (while he was nudging my leg with his nose), and said, "You really shouldn't distract service dogs!" She looked so sorry, which just made me feel bad for overreacting.

She was not the first person that day to talk to him, and I was over it.

I do think people need to realize "he's a service dog" isn't enough for most people. When someone does not know that a service dog isn't supposed to be pet, that info tells them nothing. "He's a service dog, so he isn't supposed to be pet by strangers" is way clearer

I like the way you handled this, every time I see a video like this, the person with the service dog always starts screaming and harassing the people who didn’t know the severity of petting a service dog. I once saw a video of a woman literally slapping a toddler for petting a service dog that came up to them. She then started harassing and screaming at the child and parent and trying to hit the parent. Thank you for not overreacting and remaining polite.

My cousin had a service dog growing up and my parents trained the shit out of me to "act like the dog is invisible" and it has worked phenomenally. Now I work security at a facility and work around service dogs quite regularly. May God bless every service dog, trainer, user, and advocate!

This makes me realise i need more boundaries. If i had a service dog id feel bad & want to let everyone pet him.. i saw some great dane service dogs recently and went up and asked if i could pat & she said yes bcoz they weren't working. They were so beautiful..
I think i keep seeing these bcoz i may need one to support me but not sure i could afford it.

I have neighbors that will come onto my property and grab my dogs leash. I dont have a fence so they have long long leashes.
These people are full adults. Thankfully, both my boys are very friendly. However, my pit bull that passed away 5 years ago… he was a little less predictable. Miss him very much.

People just lack respect and boundaries. Im glad this man was so quick to listen.

I recently got bit by my own dog (he drew a little blood) because I took him to a store. The people there know me and my dog and I called ahead to make sure I can bring him. I use the opportunity to train him and while neither of my dogs are service dogs they always both look at me funny before I pass out. He lays next to me or sits next to me while I get what I need. Some guy walked up and grabbed my dog from behind without warning while I was rewarding my dog and he got spooked and chomped down on my fingers instead of the treat. The man acted like he did nothing wrong and then another man came by as I was scolding the first one and he started bending over and trying to grab my dog’s face. My dog is only a people person if I encourage him to greet people and I told both the men I was training him and to please not distract him, they both just acted like they didn’t even notice he was there. I guess all dogs just need a giant “DO NOT PET” sticker in bright letters on them
