We know there’s nothing quite like watching a beautiful firework display light up the sky —unless you’re a dog. While us humans may “ooh” and “ahh” at the show, many pups find fireworks stressful, scary, and overwhelming. As pet parents, it’s our job to help them feel safe and secure during these noisy celebrations.

Whether it’s the Fourth of July, New Year’s Eve, or a neighborhood celebration, here are some tips to keep your pup calm during fireworks.

Keep Your Dog Away from Fireworks

Even the bravest pups can get startled by the loud noises, flashing lights, and crowds. That’s why the safest place for your dog during fireworks is indoors, far from the action. Resist the urge to bring them along to the celebration, even if they seem fine in other noisy environments. Fireworks are unpredictable and can trigger fear, anxiety, or even panic in pups.

Create a Safe Space for Your Dog

Similar to preparing your dog for a storm, before the fireworks start, set up a cozy, comfortable retreat for your pup. Choose a quiet room with minimal windows and outside noise. Add their favorite blanket, a toy or two, and maybe even one of your worn t-shirts to provide a comforting scent. You can also use white noise machines, calming music, or TV background noise to help drown out the outside noise. Thundershirts can also be a great tool—they apply gentle, constant pressure that can help ease anxiety in many dogs.

Desensitize Your Dog to the Sounds of Fireworks

If your dog is especially sensitive to noise, consider desensitization training well in advance of the next celebration. Start by playing soft recordings of fireworks at a low volume while giving treats, cuddles, or playing their favorite game. Gradually increase the volume, always pairing it with positive experiences. Over time, your pup can learn that the sound of fireworks means something good is coming instead of associating it with something scary.

Make Sure Your Dog Has Proper ID

Fireworks are one of the top reasons pets go missing, especially during holidays like the Fourth of July. A startled pup can bolt out a door or jump a fence before you have time to react. To give yourself peace of mind, make sure your dog’s ID tags are securely attached and display current contact information. If your dog is microchipped, confirm that your information is registered and up to date.

Bring Your Dog to Daycare or Overnight Boarding

One of the best ways to help your pup stay calm during fireworks? Tire them out with a full day of play at Dogtopia! A day of safe, supervised socialization with other pups provides mental and physical stimulation can help reduce anxiety later. By the time the fireworks start, your dog will be ready to relax or even sleep through the celebration.

We also offer overnight boarding in addition to daycare. Your pup can spend the evening in a familiar, comforting environment with their furry friends from daycare, and you can enjoy your celebration knowing your pup is safe and surrounded by love.

Ready to bring your dog in for daycare or boarding? Schedule a Meet & Greet today.
