What are some exercises I can do at home with my dog to help him build his confidence in himself as well as in me as the leader? We had a trainer come by for an evaluation and she mentioned he does not view me as the pack leader, he views me as weak and this, along with his fear of other dogs after being bit, can add to his dog aggression.
Dealing with anxiety or neurotic behavior? Go to, and insist upon, basic, but firm commands. When pup complies, praise. Pup will feel good about you and himself.
This video is still so relevant. I have been doing this back and forth outside on my little cul-de-sac street now for a few days, and my 8 month old's heel is so much better… foundationally he's been great indoors, but outside, he is madly distracted by anything. love that a video with surprisingly less than 1MM views from 6 years ago is still so helpful from Tom's channel
In the turns he first turned away from you every time… and then he started turning towards you. Very nice.
I have a very hypervigilant dog-aggressive dog (16 months old little Kangal-Mix) saved before she went to the shelter and even with this exercise ALWAYS executed for more than five weeks now, there is still no lasting success. Outside the house she is still making to much decisions herself and not checking in with me. This behaviour seems to have gotten cemented through her puppy-time up till I took her. Very difficult to crack. Always wanting to be in front of me. Even in the sit looking around like a squirrel. I'm at my wit's end…
I got a Doberman Pinscher, he is 6 months and walking him is extremely challenging. He forgets all the training, he fixes with other dogs, birds bicycles and anything else. I tried this and he is not getting it. The only way he relax is if I let him off leash and that comes with a risk on the trails if we meet a leashed dog. Losing my hope here
YOU young man are a gift!!! I was at my wit's end with my cutesy dog. She barks at everyone and doesn't listen. I literally had looked into hiring a trainer but the price was inordinate and I still wasn't sure what the trainer was really going to do– he was too nebulous in his outcomes. Well…I watched this video and the light bulb went off…my cutesy dog didn't see me as a leader and more like a friend. I changed some things you intuitively shared and literally in one day…I went from having a dog with severe car sickness to a calmer dog who doesn't bark. I wanted to try out your tips so took her to an open area where people walk (mini retail center) I used a leash and a collar and didn't use the harness. Gently tugged at when anxiety occurred. At first she whimpered…stopped barking and then relaxed on the bench and stopped making noises when people passed by. All evening obedience has been in place. Thank you!! Thank you!!! I'm going to do things differently. Taking her out twice a week to various places I've identified that will foster more comfortability. Thank you!!!!!
This dog is an easy case….it not a fearful dog….I'd like to see you work with a dog that attempts to run from you…all the time, bites and the leash…digging in…will not move…..
I have a toy poodle. I want a slip collar or slip lead leash that will work well. Particularly that will sit and stay behind the ears. Can you suggest any?
I’ve watched so many vids, talked to so many ppl, tried everything to help my super sweet but super fearful 4yo Shitzhu. I’ve had him since he was 9 wks & have no idea what caused the fear. This might be the advise I needed!! I so want him to be happy, esp outside & enjoy life. It’s to the pt where he won’t eat or poop most days. Every noise scares him. I use soft music & white noise inside, holistic calming supplements, take him on short peaceful walks & unless he meets another dog, he pulls & pulls to come back home 😢

Right on!! I teach the same way!! It's the owners that need to understand and apply. Thank you!! Great job!!!!
What’s the slip collar?
It’s wild how children are always better for strangers than they are their mothers. Lol!!
what if you say come and he doesnt understand. then you have to teach him that first?

Can you speak to the prong collar vs the plastic pinch collar? When best to use either, advantages or each? Thanks in advance.
