My 7 month old "himself" is nothing but high energy, jumping on otherr dogs, nipping/play biting (not biting down hard, no marks, but entire snouts in his mouth which most dogs are not cool with). Everybody in stores has always had to ask me to want to interact with him, so thats not to much a problem. But whenever were home he wants to play with hands, even though weve always said "no hands" and stopped interacting for a minute then redirecting towards a toy, if he does it again "no hands", praise "yes/good dog"/treats/accepting play when he approaches or plays with a toy. Hes only interacted with senior (14+) large and small dogs and his mom when she visits (now 7 and seems to have post partom/completely different dog since having this (2nd) liter) and cuddles with our antisocial cat. Only kids anytime they ask when were out. Hes already 60 pounds, tall, sweet ball of whiney energy. Please how do I fix his behavior so he doesnt anger dogs when he plays with them? Im so afraid his play/excited behavior, that the old dogs get PO about, is going to cause other (not senior) dogs to snap at him the same way. Hes so fearful because of my ignorance 😢 someone reply with where i can get the right answers
PLEASE, if you have a dog under 1.5 years old, search n watch Beckman's dog training channel "age appropriateness" vids.
It's NOT required to "socialize" a puppy by exposing it to everything possible from the human world.
His vids discuss what a young dogs mind is ready for and what you should focus on at what age.
This is something that Tom touches on in this short but doesn't really explain why or what is appropriate (limits of a short).
However, no trainer is talking about age appropriateness in relation to socializing or exposing young dogs to the human world. Beckman's goes into detail on what you can expect and what you should focus on at what age.
This ISN'T a knock against Tom, this channel, as he's at least not pushing the typical over exposure that most trainers do. However, Tom could step it up by going into more detail on age appropriate exposure and training.
Some toddlers would be OK if you dropped them off at elementary school and turned them loose. Other toddlers might be overwhelmed and develop fears or what shows up as reactivity in dogs.
Great advice I will be teaching my 14 week shih tzu this type of behavior and it’s being great so far. But it’s also hard because with toy dogs people want to touch them because they think toy dogs are safer especially children. I don’t want them to cross my dogs boundaries and I don’t want my dog to cross their boundaries.
We brought our dog during quarantine so the whole time she was away from ppl and only around family. Bit now that things opened up, it's hard to control her. When relatives visit she doesn't stop barking even for a second. She'll bark for as long as someone else is at home. She doesn't like kids. She'll bark at any person or dog, walking in the street (we live on the first floor). She is easily scared of ppl. She has also been very aggressive to me and my elder sis but no one else in the family. When me and my sis were the ones who took most care of her since she came Idk what to do and my mom is saying that she's going to leave her at an NGO as she is always barking and neighbors hv been complaining. She's 3 btw
My five month old puppy literally is obsessed with others I don’t let her greet everyone she sees and with my niece she’s way to obsessed with her, literally locked in her every movement in a good way, I know it’ll take consistency but I’d like some advice on dealing with this more thoroughly, it’s something I’d like to change also because what if someone brakes in and she’s just trying to play catch with them like no -.-
Question I’m a dog trainer at bucks dog training and I am working with a puppy that take food SO RUFF and has drew blood a few times from us. I feel like we have tried every trick in the book. (Having them like our hand before giving the treat, take it gently. Slip lead for corrections, working them and then rewarding from hand, having our hands in the bowl as they eat, picking the bowl up when he gets to ruff) but he still eats with his teeth any advice ( can send video of his behavior)
I like that might 9 week pup is curious to meet other dogs, no matter their size but waits to get approached first but once they bark she hides behind me
I learned real quick with my first dog that you have to be a role model. They aren’t just accessories to your life. You have to actively train them, socialize them, feed them well, get them exercise and be the leader that they need. I eventually got my first one under control and once she started getting grey hairs she was a fully relaxed, playful, and useful part of the family. She was broken of jumping on people, i now trust her around my great grandmother with dementia, she doesnt get in her way and on the rare occasion that she does sneak out when im not around, she stays around her so she has something to lean on to catch her breath. Not so much anymore because she got diabetes and went blind, but she helped me train my other two puppies when they were little on how to be a good dog. If you’re a good role model to a dog, your dog will reflect that. Those puppies now do the same things my oldest one does. They constantly stage themselves out of my grannies way, yet conveniently on either side so that she can balance herself with them. They obey the property line at all times, the come on the first recall, i can tell them to stay and leave for 10 minutes and they will still be right there in that spot, they know how to retrieve things for me, they go down to the road and get the packages and bring them up for a bacon treat. My old blind diabetic dog was such a great role model to my other dogs, i couldnt ask for a better blessing than having my three fart hounds😂
Great points! I have the opportunity to adopt a 15 week old Shihpoo puppy and I've been told that's no-no since the dog is past the prime socialization age of 8-10 weeks. Is it really a bad idea to adopt of 15 week old puppy?
I agree, for me socializing pups, is just showing and teaching them the difference between prey and off limits so they recognize pets, humans, from predators, threats, etc.
I got a German shepard puppy today and she is very Sky and timid. How can I get her out of this shell? Should I leave her in a room to let her calm down
Question my pittie male constantly wants to rip my puppy hound apart. I’ve brought him over to sniff her and he gets walks but he’s still ready to bite.
I made this mistake, and now my 150+ lb dog wants to greet everyone. And I'm really working on nipping it in the bud right now. He did good yesterday around a bunch of screaming kids tho
I told my friends when they first got their puppy, not to let her jump up or on them. Now she’s a giant 40lb 8 month old that LEAPS on them while they sit on the couch and they complain of bruises. THAT is why you train puppies. You’re actually training for adulthood.
I never thought of it like that ! About the puppy going up to all the dogs then we yell at them when they are adult size going up to all the dogs !!! Lol it's crazy when u think about it ! Thanks for the aahhaa moment !!!
Had someone ask to pet my 1yr old APBT at the playground yesterday. The park itself is dog friendly so while my daughter was on the playground, I took time to train Kova in a more energetic environment (in the field next to the playground). A lady walked up and asked if she could pet her, to which I said “No ma’am I’m sorry not right now”. She immediately assumed my dog was aggressive and verbally attacked me because of it. I tried explaining to her that I’m training her right now and when I was done I’d be more than happy to let her say hi. She didn’t like my answer and when I was done 15mins later, I walked the 50ft to the playground so my daughter and her friends could play with Kova. Well the lady made a scene. She called the cops and they told them “there is a vicious pit bull off a leash here lungeing at children”. A bold faced lie. Thankfully when the cops came the moms and dads there sided with me and told the officers that the woman is lying and my dog had been leashed the entire time and that she only time she moved forward at someone, that someone was MY child and my dog was simply giving her kisses. She could’ve easily turned this into a horrible situation for my dog and family. More so because she is an American Pit Bull Terrier and the stigma the media has portrayed of them. Moral of the story, just because someone says no to you petting their dog, DOES NOT MEAN THE DOG IS AGGRESSIVE!
Yes, my dog is big, apparently scary looking, and he thinks everyone loves him and wants to pet him. The look on people's face when he's going toward them…then it's like his feelings are hurt when they dont want to pet him
My dog is totally uninterested in other dogs. Dogs can run up to him and he doesn't even acknowledge them. He wants to smell everything and checkout the area. ACCEPT with really old dogs. He will follow an old dog everytime. If a dog comes up while he's walking with the old dog, it's fine. He won't even pay attention to the new dog. I go out and he plays if I play with him, then he gets bored and walks away continuing to check out the smell. The only time he made any aggressive response was the first time a large dog charged at me, playfully, he growled and showed his teeth. The warning stopped the dog and ended up smelling him and walked away. That is the only time it occurred. Should I let him continue to be disinterested? How do you get a dog interested and wanting to play? I've never seen a dog so uninterested in other dogs.
Since quarantine my dog has gotten a bit "unsocialized" and that's definitely something we need to work on. I've been using your vids to help with basics and leash etiquette first. Seems to be going well.
I’m realizing that must be the issue I’m having with my newly adopted 9 month old Aussie. He is overly friendly and DESPERATELY wants to get to any and all humans and dogs he sees or hears. He is wicked smart and laser focused on me at home, but out on walks is a different story! He doesn’t hear me to save himself.
I've been watching your videos to learn how to train my puppy. She is an Australian shepherd, 4 months old. There is a huge dog that is just a few doors over from me that scares her as well as myself and other neighbors. When I take Dolly out potty and that dog is outside I end up taking her over to my neighbors yard area to do her business. What can I do to ease her and my fear? I'm trying to leash train her and it's frustrating when this dog barks and strains his lead trying to get at us. The owner has it on a rope lead.
Larry Krohn prefers the term "exposure" which I like because there is quite the misconception of what socialization actually means. I constantly deal with clients that say they socialized their puppy from 8 weeks a ton, and did the dog park 4 or 5 days a week or more but then at 8 to 12 months dealing with a very reactive or over excited dog because they see more value and get more reinforcement playing with dogs than their humans. Neutral is the absolutely best, and exposure is key, along with GOOD experiences in a controlled and structured environment when they do get to play off leash etc. Thanks for sharing!
I agree and disagree with this. As a trainer I teach puppies should meet a million people. However, it should be taught that it is earned. Permission must be given. The pup should learn that people are good. But again there are a million ways to train the same thing and each one is specific to each dog. Props to educating people man. Very well explained.
I so need your help. I have a 3 month old goldendoodle and I have been trying to train him, but I have no idea what I'm doing #sendhelp #puppymom #goldendoodle
My dog is terrified of diesel trucks. Extremely Anxious. I have tried Everything. We are now trying Prozac in hopes to calm him enough to work outdoors and break this debilitating cycle. Any good advice is so appreciated
100% people are always surprised that my gsd didn't play with another dog until he was about 16-18 months old, because he's great with them and has no issues. They are also surprised that he's not reactive, especially when other peoples dogs are losing it about a meter away
So how can I reverse these behaviors. Just took over ownership of this dog and I've established discipline and boundaries at home. But she'll run up to people and other dogs and bark at them. But won't bite. However, that's still scary for both parties because they don't know that she's not aggressive. What's a good place to start? Right now she's staying on the leash from now on and I make sure people don't approach her immediately.

I’m guilty. How do I break this in my four-year-old female lab she thinks every dog and every person wants to be her best friend.

And people think the dogs need to play to socialize. I keep mine in a down and do not allow upclose and personal interactions. My dog is a Nutt job.
Very good advice! Thank you for your service! You have taught me a lot about my GSD❤

socialization is exposure to stuff = people, life, trains, cars, dogs, bikes, skates, blowers, grass choppers. A dog needs to deal with environment.

What about Parvo?
My 1 year old male pitbull is tooo friendly with strangers. How do I stop him from behaving like that😢
Thank you for this. Lost my fur baby 13 months ago, ready for a new one and want to make it right, be the best mom

Teaching them to be neutral is the best advice ever. Tom’s videos are the best, have helped me so much.
Yup I did this with my first pup and yes it became a huge problem later on!! You’re soooo 100% correct!
