Dog With Broken Legs Saved By Man Who Found Her In The Woods

There, laying motionless and silent, was a young, off-white dog. Starving and immobile, she didn’t seem to have the strength to move. Whatmough approached slowly, cautious not to scare her off. She showed signs of fear, baring her teeth and growling, but didn’t run. The only food he had was berries, which she surprisingly ate, wagging her tail faintly. Offering her water from his bottle, she drank eagerly, giving him a glimmer of hope.

Facing overwhelming decisions, Whatmough decided to care for the dog himself, at least temporarily. But as he shared her journey online, the community rallied. Donations poured in—$4,000 in a single day—confirming to him that he couldn’t give her up. He named her Willow.

Through tireless physical therapy and unwavering love, Willow regained mobility. Today, she hikes for hours with Whatmough, racing through snow and living the life she was almost denied. “She also would show some signs of discomfort when I would stretch and pull her back legs but I would always stop and then she would let me stretch her some more.  She progressively resisted less and less and now she doesn’t seem to mind at all when I really pull hard and work to stretch her.”

Willow didn’t let her past experiences turn her off to romping through the woods. She and Whatmough spend all their time together, especially now that he works at home.

“I am outside hiking 2-6 hours everyday summer and winter and she loves it all. She really loves the snow but after about 4hrs in -30C she starts to try and get her paws off the snow and looks for shelter and I know it’s time to go back home.”

For a dog with formerly broken and malformed back legs, Willow runs like an absolute champ now!

Here is video of me walking out a dog I found malnourished in the woods…When I took her to the vet I found that both of her rear femurs were badly broken and beginning to set about an inch shorter than they should be.
