I use to be a trucker and wanted a road dog with me and rescued a Doberman/German shepherd just around 1yo and we saw 23/50 states. He doesn’t have separation anxiety and many places wanted the driver to back in and then wait in the office until unloaded then I can go and it’s crazy over the road and now in an apartment dog has been able to transition it’s just what to feed him. He seems to be going on hunger strikes

I luckily avoided separation anxiety by ignoring my puppy when he was smothering me upon arrival. He was predicted to be about 120-150 lbs, so I did NOT need a XXL dog jumping on me the instant I got home with groceries/guests. He never jumps, and is considered to be extremely polite by trainers standards.

it's so hard but i work at a dog daycare and ive seen some pretty bad cases of separation anxiety and i would never want my dog to be like that. these days i was a bit sensible and had tears in my eyes but didn't even look at my dog until he calmed down lol

I come in and don’t say anything to him until about ten minutes later – I was told to do this by someone who bred cockers

We give our velcro lab a piggy ear every time everyone is going to leave the house for a longer period of time. When he sees us by the door he comes over to the piggy ear cupboard and once the paper rattles he is off to his doggy bed where he gets the ear.
    Made a huge difference.

I can’t leave my dog alone. I take him to work and he has to be near me all the time 😂
I’ve left three jobs already because they were rude to my doge.

Oddly I only have one with separation anxiety, the other just looks at her like give me break, we have food and water. She is definitely worse than my male.

I come in, take off my shoes and coat, walk through the house to let her out the back door for toilet, then I will acknowledge her verbally. so much more settled and while she's still sat waiting for me when I get home, she stays sat until we go to the back door. Definitely helps with no jumping up.

All these traits stem from native instinct patterns.
I like wild breeds but they wont let you back in the house unless you go mouth to mouth as soon as you come in – otherwise they can bite. They have a kind of greeting ceremony which is mandatory.

My dog use to freak out in a crate. He had no past trauma with them. He just wanted to go with us everywhere and be glued to us but that's not possible. So I bought him a no bark collar because I discovered with him that the barking and whining would escalate things and get him worked up more. Once the barking was properly corrected he stopped having issues in the crate. We also didn't need the collar anymore.

So happy with my idiot lazy Lab, he gets a treat when i leave and before i close the door behind me he is back in his safeplace vast asleep.

When i get home, i honk the horn and it's 50-50 if he is at the door or not. Most of the time he's lying on his back ready for a belly rub, then walk out in to the garden to take a piss and shit while i make a coffee and then it's playtime LOL

Never really trained him, just left him at home not locked up in a bench, the whole house for himself free to roam and he never ever abused that liberty.

I still dont know if i'm just lucky he is smarter then me or i'm just such a good boss to him i can trust him no matter what. He was an uneducated 1.5 year old Lab before i took him in, all i did was open the door to the garden so he could go out whenever he wanted, which now in wintertime is bitting me in the arse 🙂 Did some retrieving training with him and ignore him when he wanted to play untill he was mellow and then play with him untill he was dead tired, that's it. Sleep, play on my terms not yours because you are sleeping 22 out of 24 hours anyway if you get to cal the show. So it's just me deciding which 2 hours you get to play buddy 😉😉😉😉😉😉😉

My last dog didn't react to me leaving the house and was pretty good when I came home. He greeted me, but it wasn't excessive. He would panic a bit if I left in the car or on a bike when he was outside in the yard. In the summer, I would take him on a bike ride before going to the gym. This would wear him out for some time(it was a border collie) while I could get proper exercise at the gym. I had to sneak away so he wouldn't notice me.
I did use his 'separation anxiety' actively when training him to walk off lead(mandatory lead season is April 1st to August 20th here in Norway).
If he walked too far, I would sneak off into the bushes and make a little squeal. He would come rushing back, trying to find me. After a few times, he got conditioned to always check back on me and my position when he was off lead.

Absolutely spot on! Anytime we come home or back inside from being outside away from our Winston, we act perfectly normal/routine/calm and do not talk to him, touch him or even make eye contact with him for 5 minutes.

Result? He stays 100% calm, unfazed and fine. After 5 minutes we call him to us for a good ear rub or fluff on his head and he’s in heaven – and calm!

He was WIRED/hyper/over-excited before we started doing this. Within 3 times of doing this, he changed/calmed completely! It’s amazing!

Our dog anxiety poos when we leave him alone. We ignore him and sort it but sometimes he doesn't do this and we want to reward this – but can we or should we? Because then it seems like we're creating more anxiety next time.

Question? What are healthier alternative outlets for dog's energy like this? Just wondering. We already not to throw her parties when coming home and to try and slip out quietly, often with our dog happily licking her frozen Kong full of peanut butter with the TV on. So far so good though she does get some separation anxiety at least for my wife who I had to tell to talk to her dogs because she was trying so hard our doggy was getting sad feeling ignored lol. Is it bad to then feed in and say hi once she's like settled in and then give her a nice spirited hello, or should that be as low key as possible too?
