The last dog I owned was a Great Dane. I had no intention of picking him up after he was 6 months old.
Omg… i wouldnt even pick up a small dog like that.
However earlier i carried my GSD in a similar fashion but by her ribs. Like we would anyone (because people shouldnt pick up their babies by their arms either). I noticed she liked it more than when id carry her on her back (which my smaller dogs dont mind) i think i may be too small to carry her like that.

Doc Busset, Jacksonville MO. Taught me this when I was 4 years old, almost 60 years ago. We had a litter of puppies that were orphaned at 3 days old. I had been picking them up by their front legs to help with feeding and defecation.

What about cats? Most cats would hate it so it’s not an issue, but I have one cat who requests it. He’s quite big, around 6kg. I’ve never picked him up by the legs, but sometimes under the arms. (He’s more ragdoll than a ragdoll, I can carry him like a baby, wear him like a scarf, but I don’t want to do anything that hurts him obviously.)

I pick dogs up by one leg and swing them in a circle. They think its a great joy because they start howling and singing.

You have to be pretty stupid to pick up a dog like that. You do it by their belly area, arms parallel to the dogs length, and try to get as much area as possible, like a hug, before even lifting. You try not to crush any area just be snug and avoid locking arms, legs in your grip (Duh). I have to pick up my dog daily when I take her on walks cause we live up stairs with metal holes. My dog is smaller, but this dog would be picked up the same way.
Simply put… My Lab(whom we walk 2-3 times a week) needs to lose weight before we even consider lifting 😬
