Subscribed ✅ and can't wait to get my new Goldendoodle puppy in 2 days. I will be using all your strategies for success. This new furry luv will be my new best friend and emotional companion.
My biggest question here is how do I do the tough love crate train approach AND at the same time start housebreaking? About every 2-3 hours she seems ready to go potty. She'll let us know with a whine fit. The problem is it sounds like the same whining as when I also leave the room
Very helpful, we’re looking at bringing home our first puppy, we have 2 cats and 2 children and I’m worried we will pick the wrong puppy and not be good enough for it. I’m trying to do as much research as possible to be able to do things right.
People who get a dog should realize they have responsibility for an animal's well being, not just take a shortcut. Even if it is an animal, it is still a baby that has needs after all. It is crying in distress and letting a puppy cry it out overnight when it just lost their mama and litter mates is just wrong. Even though you just framed it as a possible less recommended approach, I don't this it's about tough love, it's actually letting puppies suffer for human convenience.
Problems with confining a puppy alone:
– stress and fear in crucial developmental phase where early bonding is important
– risk negative associations with the crate, pen or loneliness in general
– undermine trust at a time where trust is most important.
I appreciate that you advocate for a more modern approach and hope other trainers follow suit. If others would train dogs like you with a mindset of responsibility first, convenince second, a lot of preventable suffering can be avoided. Many dogs do well with tough love but a gentle approach reduces the probability of anxiety and crate phobia massively. Because sometimes instead of becoming more independent, some dogs develop clinginess and insecurity because they don't associate being alone with safety. A slow approach doesn't spoil them, it makes them more secure adults.
I’m a firm believer the dog should sleep in the bedroom. And eventually on the bed if you can. I throw an old sheet over the covers for the dogs, my dogs have slept w me for 25 years. I love it. I’m missing having a dog next to me very much. But soon, soon, time to welcome a new pup.
1/3 c white vinegar, a couple drops of Dawn dish soap in a half gallon of warm water. Blot the urine stain as dry as you can, then, use the soap and vinegar to clean. Then blot again. Don’t over soak. Pee smell will be gone so dog won’t go there again.
Or just put a mattress next to the crate and sleep there with the puppy as long as its needed. Then the puppy will be sleeping in the same place every single night, and you can gradually remove yourself and the mattress. Much easier than moving the crate.
No jokes the first night's can be traumatic… I actually had to put his crate in the car for like an hour on the first night, because the little bastard just wouldn't shut up even for a second. Was acting like he was dying. He is a good boi now, but unfortunately I couldn't use that same crate ever again. It's what he was in the car in, on the way home, and where he felt he was dying on the first night. So he just had terrible connotations with that thing…
I have a quetion , I crate train my jack russle since day one. She is so calm , dont chew on things accept her chewing dried chicken paws ext. Never cry through the night ….did I trained her too hard , because if I look at her siblings from videos I got , they destoy their toys ext. Mine is just enjoying her humans , play a little and not destrying her toys ,her tail is up and confident , she takes her 4x / day walks with training included…is my jack russle broken because she is not rushing and destroying everything….dis I train her too hard. She never cry in her crate , even if I sit outside a closed house for 2 hours ? This crate traing is reaching day 3…..I tried to do everything by the book. I even dressed for work jingled the housekeys and " left" for 2 hours while I were outside …..and not one cry …did I over crate train her ?
I walked about a mile from the animal shelter and figured my 5 month pitbull mix get used to the big city and all that’s going on. It was bit of a challenge to get it to walk when it pull to always go the opposite direction. Or it wanted to pull on the leash and it’s very strong and i can break that habit when it understand more and builds a stronger relationship.
Most females and senior would not be able to handle the pups strong pull and I barely am and I’m a fit man.

Educational content thrives when disguised as entertainment
I didn’t think to move the crate next to my bed because I’ve been like God I hope I don’t have to sleep on the floor next to the crate

What if we want our dogs sleeping in our bed?? Can we start in the bed from day 1? We are not crate people – we are bed snuggling people!
