Shih Tzus have a way of winning people over with their expressive eyes and silky coats. But behind the charm is a breed that requires real commitment. Before you decide to bring one into your life, here are some things worth knowing.

1. They’re more companion than watchdog

Despite their history as palace pets in China, Shih Tzus are not guard dogs. They may bark at noises or strangers, but they’re generally gentle and happiest when close to their family. Their role is to be a companion, not a protector.

2. Grooming is a lifestyle

That long, flowing coat you see in show dogs doesn’t maintain itself. Daily brushing keeps mats away, and professional grooming every few weeks is almost non-negotiable. If that level of upkeep feels overwhelming, many owners choose a shorter “puppy cut” that’s easier to manage.

3. They don’t need miles of exercise

Unlike high-energy breeds, Shih Tzus are content with short walks and indoor play. They enjoy a bit of activity but thrive most on being near their humans. This makes them adaptable for apartment living, though they still need consistent movement to stay healthy.

4. Heat can be hard on them

Their short noses mean they can struggle in hot or humid weather. A Shih Tzu left in the sun too long may overheat quickly. They do best in climate-controlled environments and should always have access to shade and water.

5. They can be a little stubborn

Shih Tzus are intelligent but not always eager to please. Training takes patience and a steady routine. Positive reinforcement works best, as harsh methods will only backfire. Consistency pays off with a dog that’s polite and well-mannered.

6. They love attention but also independence

A Shih Tzu will happily curl up on your lap, but they’re not quite as clingy as some toy breeds. They enjoy affection yet also appreciate time lounging on their own pillow or bed. Their balanced temperament makes them adaptable to different households.

7. Health requires awareness

Like all breeds, Shih Tzus have some health concerns worth noting. Eye problems, breathing difficulties, and joint issues are not uncommon. Regular vet visits, good nutrition, and weight management go a long way in helping them live full, comfortable lives.

A Shih Tzu can bring years of warmth and companionship, but they aren’t a low-maintenance choice. If you’re ready for grooming routines, mindful care, and a steady commitment, you’ll likely find that this small dog leaves an outsized mark on your life.
