All 4 of my dogs have been rescues, but all 4 were also gotten at 1yr or younger. I think getting them so young has avoided a number of the problems most videos and blogs warn about, they all have pretty much jumped right into being "pets" just needing to refine house manners and build training
I’ve had several rescue dogs over the years and each one is different. They all had mange of some kind and worms, some so full of worms they almost died. My current dog I picked up was very pregnant and at less than 40 lbs had 11 puppies! She then had to be spayed later plus vaccines and is positive for heart worms so that gets very expensive. One of my rescues was a prior cruelty case and she is very afraid of brooms and vacuums and things like that. You never know what you’re going to encounter so be prepared. But good job adopting a rescue, they do know you are trying to help them!
Your dog looks just like my Charlie who also was a rescue dog. He was scared of everything too but loved people especially women. We had to put him down a few days ago. We will be looking for another dog but needed a refresh course so found your video.
I rescued a wee spanish terrier mix in June it has been achallenge she has settled in has made lots of friends but reacts to strange dogs on leads. She was a stray street dog so she has never lived in a house its been hard for her. She is very loving and its been worth it she has came on so much inconfidence
Two months ago we rescued a dog that had been picked up as a stray, in one town held for 9 days at vets at a different town. On the 10th day they were going to euthanize her. We saw the plea on the internet on Friday the city hall was closed till 9 on Monday both city hall and the vet closed at noon. It was a 2 hour drive. We arrived at 11:30 discovered the vet where she was 12 miles away. We arrived 11:52. So what do you name a dog rescued 8 minutes before death. Lucky! we’ve had trouble with furniture chewing, we have decided she might be a blue healer. She needs lots of exercise.
Really good advice. I’m at 3 weeks with my beautiful rescue.. do you have any thoughts on how I can get her to let me touch her.. she’s very skittish and I have to put medicine on a hot spot that she has.
I adopted a chihuahua from the animal shelter yesterday and he’s not nearly as loving and social as i thought he’d be. In fact i feel he tried to literally avoid me and he doesn’t listen to me but he’s a year old
So I just adopted a medium size dog that has trust issues previous owners tied dog up for days at a time to a tree and never groomed it. Fur was very matted. The people said that too many people passed Marley up and they were no longer going to adopt. My thought was that they were going to destroy the dog. So I told my sister Gary I would adopt a dog and I will come and pick it up on Wednesday. I have a four bedroom house no kids and went out but all his toys food everything the dog needs I just need advice on how I need to treat this dog I want him to have a good home and I want them to be loved so I just need advice and what I need to do I haven’t had a dog in over 40 years so I’m kind of rusty any advice would be greatly appreciate it.
When a rescue dog is as reactive as mine then there's nothing you can do to help them, you just have to deal with them until they die. Mine was given to the shelter when he was 4 by his original owners then was adopted by a family and given back to the shelter after 5 months. I don't blame them at all, it's a life ruiner for sure.
We've had our beautiful french bulldog for 16 weeks, she's 5, she's been kept outside & used repeatedly as a breeding bitch, she lived in a crate in a shed, no love, no name, no known date of birth, her ears look like cornflakes due to having the bitten as she fought for her dinner, her space, her bed she's also lost some front teeth, her breeder surrender 12 dogs but still has a thriving business! 😥 Then she spent 2 months with a lovely foster lady, then came to us. She wasn't toilet trained but luckily it was summer so doors were open, we're happy with where she's up to, perhaps one accident a week at night now we've got rid of the crate, she's an amazing little mite, now she's settled & realises that she's staying forever! But, there's always a but!! She hoards all her toys, she has 2 bed sites, one near my hubby's side of the sofa, the other across the lounge, my adult son will try to engage her in play, she'll snatch the toy, run to her sofa bed, then go back to snatch the next thing he touches. She also does this with my daughter's Rottie when he comes over, he just wants to play, have fun, share the toys, but she grabs them from him & scarpers!! I do try to take them back off of her & return them to Moose, but she'll just get it later! How do we stop the guarding of what she's as high value stuff like her toys, I'm having Moose for a week next year, I don't want any fights or upset! Thank you for your great video.
I rescued an ex racing greyhound about 4 months ago and she's still settling in, still super timid. She spent her first 2 years of life in a racing kennel and had never been inside a house before. She came from across the country on a plane to the rescue where she stayed for a few months before I brought her home. So her life wasn't exactly stable. I taught her where her bed was and took her out on lead to go toilet every couple of hours. She picked it up super quickly. But she was scared of everything and still gets overwhelmed. We had to teach her to walk up and down the stairs and put tape on the glass doors so she didn't run into them, as she had never seen glass doors before. It's been a hell of a change for her but we are slowly working on her confidence and she is improving.
Help! Our rescue 2.5 yr old terrier/poodle is great most of the time. No particular reason she griwls, growls, and spins chews on tail. Its very frightening. She bite 2 of my guests. Is there any hope. We are looking for a dog trainer that can help us but most want to socialize her with other dogs, etc. What can we do?
Not too sure why nobody has done up a list yet, but…
5 Common Mistakes for Rescue Dog Owners 1. Treating it like it's a pet dog 2. Not considering possible additional medical costs 3. Thinking that the dog will settle in overnight 4. Flooding the dog with new experiences 5. Not starting the training soon enough
My dog is from a shelter and she was really loved by the workers there as any other dogs there are so when the shelter workers left her at our house she was crying not really crying but wimpering while looking at the gate it was so sad to look at hope she feels more at home and gets used to us
I never punish my dog. Dogs don't understand and don't feel guilty. If he barks or does something I don't want him to do, I say Ack, ack, or sssssh, sssssh and jerk the leash once and it works or at home I just make the sound. I NEVER ever yell or hit !!!!!! Dogs are pack animals an we have to establish ourself as the pack leader (alpha dog) and they will follow us and look to us for leadership . Be patient.
The rescue adoption person brought my dog to me. I already had a bed for him near where I sit , some toys, his water bowl and a crate for when I go out. (The rescue said he was used to being in crate sometimes an didn't bark much at all. He didn't like going in the crate ( but I do need to go out and live in an apartment) I found a treat he likes (more than chicken !) and he only gets that treat when he goes in the crate and now he's less resistant to going into the crate. I also found dog anxiety music on You Tube that plays for hours and I put that on while I'm not home. When I come home, I don't make a fuss. I just open the crate door and walk away. After a few minutes I take him outside. When I leave, I put him in the crate with the special treat and a toy and leave with no fuss. I never use the crate as punishment.
I got my 7 year old rescue chihuahua mix a month ago. High anxiety and stress and fear of people and noise. He was in 2 previous homes and in the rescue 2 times. The rescue only had a little information about him which indicates possible abuse, neglect and lack of socialization when he was a puppy. I did go to the rescue the week before and spent an hour and half with Junior in a room and him taking treats and walking him outside and then he let me pet him. It's been a little progress daily over a month but because I see daily progress so I have hope. Vet put him on probiotics for his tummy and hopefully when his tummy feels better he will relax more. He does okay with another person, if they don't look at him and just ignore him or talk softly and not try to pet him. I can now pet, pick-up, hold, walk play and talk to him and he does good on a walk and will play with a couple toys ocassionally, but is afraid to be around people in a group but one quiet person is okay. He seems to like female dogs. Too bad I'm only allowed 1 dog where I live because a little female friend might help him. Hoping to see a big improvement over the next 2 months.
I know this video is 4 years old but i am going to try the question anyway. You mentioned that it may take up to three months for a rescue dog to show its true colours. Does this go both ways. Could a dog be very insecure and afraid or even a tad aggressive at first and then become a loving, soft creature after a while ? And does this mean that a dog which is insecure and afraid at first could, once comfortable, become really aggressive especially over other pets in the house, and could this be its TRUE nature revealing after a few months. I am saying this because i have a 1 year old female dog which is a rescue dog from a breeder (she was born with a leg problem and was going to be thrown away by the breeder so i adopted her), a 6 year old male cat rescued after being found in a box when he was a few days old, a female cat 13 years old found on the parking lot of my former working place when she was a couple of months old, and now i found this 1 year old dog at the shelter. She was born in the mountains of Shikoku Japan (i live in Tokyo) found by the rescue shelter when she was 2 months old, until then she lived by herself in a pack. She was dewormed, got all her shots, cleaned and fed properly and even housetrained, and now she is up for adoption. I decided to adopt her because in Japan dogs over a year old are seldom adopted and end up in a very sad place where death comes very quickly so i really want to adopt her. But she is a stray dog, born and partially raised in the mountains, in a pack, who had to fight for her life, and although the people taking care of her assure me that she is the loveliest dog, i saw her fighting with another male dog when i visited the shelter. Is there a risk that after three months, she could become really aggressive and cause a risk to my other pets. I am not particularly afraid for myself, but more for my pets who are all quite small and short in size while this dog i want to rescue is big and quite tough. If you could answer these question (or anyone else who has had the same experience), that would be much appreciated.
My cousin and I are in a 62+ and two weeks ago today rescued a 5 yr old Havanese from a puppy mill. Physically she is good. Think it was more that there was no touch contact. Never had a toy. Anyway my problem is she is so afraid of me. We're grateful that she really took to my cousin, wants to be in her lap, lets her put the leash on, lets her pick her up. Molly is still skiddish re any noise or movement. Even the act of crossing your legs puts her on scary alert. I give her the good treats which she'll take if my cousin is in the room. I can walk her after my cousin puts on the leash and walks out the door. We'll walk and come in, but I can't take off the leash. 3 months…..
so she sounds like the 1 honest person in texas i do not know very well to begin with the first time she tried to befriend me she became my worst enemy

👍🏽‼️
is why i do not think catholics in dallas want to fornicate with blacks but just want the election results for talking to blacks
so she sounds like the 1 honest person in texas i do not know very well to begin with the first time she tried to befriend me she became my worst enemy
so i suppose some jerk from denton texas in the year 1982 knows way more about everything than I
i have never been back to san diego since i moved away in feb 2011 has anyone else? i am the only person who moved and i did not own an animal
not only rescue dogs found a way to stay alive but reescued people and children too
